“Melancholy” scarf is a little bit different – I realized that not everyone liked huge knit garments. Especially kids – believe me, I’ve tried. Repeatedly. My boy thinks knit scarves are for girls and my girl – well – God gave me non-girly one so… They won’t even let me take pictures – maybe I have to start bribing them…
This time there is no chart. That would have been too complicated I think. I tried to make it more readable and separated it into blocks. I hope it helps.
Warning! This post is a long one. I didn’t find a way to cut it down, so I hope you’ll forgive me. I just wanted it to be as clear as possible.
This project doesn’t require too much yarn, BUT (you knew there will be a big fat “BUT”, right?) it requires a major focus and it may take time for this reason. If I managed to scare you then Shawl of Solitaire is a little bit easier 🙂

Cast off and hide all yarn tails. Oh, and block it. You know – wash it by hand and dry flat.
You made it. You are awesome and I am so proud of you 🙂
Hi, I also commented this on the Ravelry page, but I am not sure if you check this page more frequently.
Hope you don’t mind!
For the “sk2p” did you slip the stitch knit-wise or purl-wise? I probably won’t go back and frog mine now, but I’d like to know for next time. I have been slipping them purl-wise. Thank you! Love the pattern!
I slip knit-wise but I’m quite sure it does not effect the pattern if you slip it purl-wise. Thanks for asking.
Thanks for your reply! I got frustrated and frogged it back and slipped it knit-wise and it ended up looking better, not much difference, but I am a perfectionist, hah. A lot of other people were saying knit-wise as well. =]
Oh my, you shouldn’t have. I’m so sorry. As soon as I get back to my computer (I’m on the phone) I’ll put it in my pattern, so no one else need to frog.
Well I only had to about 30 rows. On row 128 now! I overthink EVERYTHING, so that was my fault. =D
I love the Melancholy scarf ————- can you tell me what the finished measurements are ? Ann
Oh, I forgot to write it – It’s kind of a small scarf for non-bulky scarf lovers (or kids). Longest side is 74 cm / 29 inches and the middle part of the triangle is 27,5 cm / 11 inches.
This is beautiful!💜 thank u so much for sharing yr lovely patterns with us.I want to make this a normal scarf🧣rectangular& long so Pls can you tell me the name of this stitch pattern, how many multiples of stitches&instructions for it? I would really appreciate it..😘Thanks x
Thanks for your kind words! Unfortunately, I don’t know the stitch pattern as I came up with it as I knitted. As it is knitted from side to side I can’t really tell the stitch repeats either without re-writing the whole pattern. Sorry! If and when I have some free time, I’ll look into it, and maybe I come up with the normal scarf pattern.
This scarf is beautiful! How can I increase it to shawl size?
I’m working on it (I have two more requests for that) – it’s not that easy to explain 🙂 If you understand the pattern then it could be just continued… maybe it’s easier to wait until I make it 🙂
You’re amazing, do you have any time not knitting. I thought that I was a prolific knitter but I chicken out a bit & do lots of smaller children’s things. Keep knitting! Sukiesue
Dear Duchess, you are so nice, you all shared with us here. In these days knitting fascinating me, as your beautiful shawl, I noted and I want to try, I hope I can make, if I make I will tell you. Thank you, have a nice and enjoyable knitting times, Love, nia
Where is the print button? Thanks.
Hi Dawn, looks like it’s gone. You have to copy-paste it. Sorry! I’ll try to find out where the “print” button disappeared…
What does 2/2cl mean?
It’s a left-leaning cable – 2 sts on cable needle and hold in front, knit 2, and then knit 2 from cable needle.
Hi there 🙂
About hand-knitted items, sooner or later your kids will come to a point they will love it. They probably take your style of knitted items for “granted norm”. Or they see it “too much”. Personally, I crave for your patterns. They are so feminine and gorgeous!
In the meanwhile, your kids might prefer simple accessories (vanilla striped items, or one to two dull colour) small, practical, that fits in a bag pocket would fit).
Also displaying photos of male/unisex celebrities wearing on hand-knitted sweaters? Or items from outfit/garment brands your kids would love to own/offer/be gifted some day.
In case they like simpler patterns, more minimalistic unisex accessories, Ravelry designers like Benjamin Matthews might be more of their style.
As being a mum, I wish you a lot of patience and acceptance.
Thank you! It is so thoughtful of you. They still don’t prefer hand knits but I’m sure it will change soon enough 🙂
I love your patterns. And I so want to knit the beautiful melancholy scarf as a shawl. There’s a ‘ click here for shawl’ option but when I click, it says it’s unavailable. Please, please help.
Thanks for letting me know, I forgot to update that link. Fixing that as soon as possible 🙂
