Length of the KAL: 15 weeks (September 7 to December 20)

We are knitting a triangular shawl this time and the size will be about 170 cm wingspan and 85 cm deep (after blocking).


You will need:

  • 3,5 mm needles for cast on and bind off
  • 2,5 mm needles for the main knitting
    • PS! If you want a larger shawl or you’ll use thicker yarn replace the needles with size larger ones or follow suggestions on the yarn label.
    • PPS! You can use circulars as well as we will be having a lot of stitches at the beginning (cable size is not important)
  • approx. 100 g (1500 m per 100 g) cobweb yarn (30/2)
    • PS! If you substitute it with another yarn make sure you’ll have enough of it or you can get more if needed.
    • PPS! Great substitute yarns are lace weight yarns (like these below)
    • PPPS! I’ll recommend lighter tones as it will show off the pattern details the best.
  • 11 stitch markers for cast-on (optional)
    • PS! It will be convenient if 3 of them are in a different color to mark the edges and middle.
  • 1114 beads if you decide to avoid nupp stitch
    • PS! I counted those nupps 3 times getting a different number every time, so get a bit more beads just in case.

  • K, k – knit;

Week 1

Day 1

Take larger needles and cast on 425 stitches using the knitted cast-on method (https://pattern-duchess.com/knitted-cast-on/). 
To make the process easier I would recommend you to place markers on the cast-on row as follows (this is only for the cast on and won’t make sense for the pattern, but you might find it useful to use the center marker and markers for the edges):

Now take smaller needles, and work as follows:

Row 1 (RS): sl st, p1, k to last 2 sts, p2; (425 sts) 
Row 2 (WS): sl st, k to end;

Take the cast-on process slowly. Don’t hurry, take your time. Count your stitches many times to be sure you have the correct amount. If you have a few stitches too many or a few stitches too short (like below 5), don’t frog. Just knit some of them together or pick some up. If you have more than 5 stitch error then I’m afraid you need to start all over again.

Day 2

NOTE! Usually, we will be purling the nupp stitches on the wrong side. Instructions state that the wrong side row should be knitted. Now you have a choice – you either knit those nupp loops together or you purl. 
I’m purling because I feel it’s easier for me – I can count those loops and the outcome is nicer.

EXTRA NOTE! Be careful with the yarn overs before and after nupp stitch. They tend to “get lost”. I try to remember it this way – there is a section “N, k1, N” and right before and after it should be a yarn over. Maybe that is helpful to some.

NOTE! By now, you’ll see tips of the edging forming. Once you’ve worked the 15 repeats of the first half on row 9 you arrived to the middle. Then the pattern will change slightly because the sides are beginning to mirror each other.

I didn’t want to put the markers in the middle because they get in the way. So I put the marker in the 15th tip, like this so I’ll know that the middle is around there (for me it makes the following easier and maybe this is helpful for you too):

Cut yarn leaving enough for sewing. You have 9 stitches left. Divide those stitches between two needles – one has 5 sts and one has 4 sts and set them so that they are facing. Now join those stitches one by one starting from the edge and finishing with sewing the last three stitches together.
