Knitting Q&A: When knitting a lace pattern, is one row the pattern row and the next a knit row

There are 3 options – the wrong side row, (also called a resting row), can be a purl row (most common), knit row (common for Estonian lace edgings) or pattern row. Always follow the instructions you have.

For some patterns you will work the same pattern row on both sides – usually, you’ll see something like this: “Repeat pattern row until…“. If you need to knit or purl the wrong side row then you’ll see something like: “Row 2 and all the wrong side rows: knit” or “Row 2 and all the wrong side rows: purl
