Often times you are required to make a slip stitch or otherwise known as a slip knot before starting your cast on method and you as a beginner knitter might not what this means. The purpose of the slip stitch/slip knot is to stop your cast on stitches unraveling. And it’s easy.
Slip stitch/slip knot is usually counted as your 1st stitch of the cast-on process. For example, if instructions say you need to cast on 5 stitches, then you make a slip stitch as a first stitch and cast on 4 more stitches. I hope it makes sense.
Here’s a tutorial for you, but if you prefer the video – scroll down a bit 🙂
Step 1:
Take your yarn and make a loop.
Step 2:
Bring your right yarn behind the loop…
Step 3:
…and pull it through the loop.
Step 4:
Pull the loop closed by gently pulling the yarn tails with your left hand.
Step 5:
Insert the needle and tighten up by pulling the yarn tails again.
