knitting pattern for knitted lace

1990. A year of drastic change for Estonia – transition from Soviet Union to the Republic of Estonia. I was 6 at the time and don’t remember it much. But I have read (and I have told) that money (it was still Russian ruble) was worth as much as the toilet paper. Well, I don’t know…

What I know is that about that time started to appear Estonias first crafts and knitting magazines.
Of course, they wasn’t as fancy as we can imagine… black and white on cheap paper…

Oh, and it was a year for farewell from Iron Lady…

At first, I didn’t like this pattern I found for you. I blocked it – and now love it. I hate the yarn though…

I think this pattern reminds me the sun… or an oak tree. And it forms this beautiful texture. Blocking is a “must” for this one.

Pattern repeat is 16 sts + 3 sts.

I divided this pattern into sections, so it would be better to understand.

I used two pattern repeats on my swatch.

Starting from section A:
Prep row (WS): k3, *p13, k3* rep to end;
Row 1: *p3, k4tog, YO, (k1, YO) 5 times, k4tog* rep to last 3 sts, p3;
Row 2: k3, *p13, k3* rep to end;
Repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times (now you shoud have prep row + 8 rows).
Row 9: *p3, k13* rep to last 3 sts, p3;
Row 10: k3, *p13, k3* rep to end;

Now work section B:

Row 1: k2, *(YO, k1) 2 times, YO, k4tog, p3, k4tog, (YO, k1) 3 times* rep to last st, k1;
Row 2: p1, *p7, k3, p6* rep to last 2 sts, p2;
Repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times (now you shoud have prep row + 8 rows).
Row 9: k2, *k6, p3, k7* rep to last st, k1;
Row 10: p1, *p7, k3, p6* rep to last 2 sts, p2;

Go on, alternating sections A and B.

Naturally you can play with the pattern, using only section A or only section B.
