This cowl pattern have been waiting for publishing quite some time. Why? Because I don’t know how to take pictures of red…
I know how it sounds, but I just can’t handle red. It’ll never come out the way I want it…
So, today is the day that I decided that I don’t care.
OK. I care. But not so much that I won’t publish it.
Measurements of the cowl:
63 cm x 34 cm / 24,8 inches x 13,4 inches
You’ll need:
- Straight needles size 4 mm / US 6
- Yarn to obtain the gauge
- 3 buttons
Gauge:
10 x 10 cm (4´´x4´´) = 17 sts x 32 rows

Abbreviations:
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat;
- k – knit;
- p – purl;
- YO – yarn over;
- k2tog – knit 2 together;
- ssk – slip, slip, knit together;
- sk2p – slip stitch, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over;
Cast on 100 stitches
Start with:
- Rows 1 to 4: knit;
- Row 5: purl;
- Row 6: k 1st st, *YO, k2tog* rep to last st, k last st;
- Row 7: purl;
- Rows 8 to 11: knit;
NOTE! Make a button hole on row 7 on 1st and 3rd pattern repeat as follows:
Knit according to pattern until last 6 sts. Cast off 3 sts and knit last 3 sts. On next row (row 8) knit first 3 sts, cast on 3 sts and continue with the pattern as if you just worked 6 sts.
Start with the pattern:
Row 1: k11, k2tog, YO, k2tog, *YO, k2tog, YO, k1, YO, k2, ssk, k4, nupp, k2tog, k2, YO, k2tog* rep 4 times, YO, k2tog, YO, k11;
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16: k9, p to last 9 sts, k9;
Row 3: k10, k2tog, YO, k2tog, *YO, k2tog, YO, k3, YO, k2, ssk, k2, nupp, k2tog, k2, YO, k2tog*rep 4 times, YO, k2tog, YO, k12;
Row 5: k9, k2tog, YO, k2tog, *YO, k2tog, YO, k5, YO, k2, ssk, nupp, k2tog, k2, YO, k2tog* rep 4 times, YO, k2tog, YO, k13;
Row 7: k10, k2tog, *YO, k2tog, YO, k7, YO, k2, sk2p, k2, YO, k2tog* rep 4 times, YO, k2tog, YO, k14;
Row 9: k10, YO, *ssk, YO, ssk, YO, k2, ssk, nupp, k4, k2tog, k2, YO, k1, YO* rep 4 times, ssk, YO, ssk, YO, ssk, k12;
Row 11: k11, YO, *ssk, YO, ssk, YO, k2, ssk, nupp, k2, k2tog, k2, YO, k3, YO* rep 4 times, ssk, YO, ssk, YO, ssk, k11;
Row 13: k12, YO, *ssk, YO, ssk, YO, k2, ssk, nupp, k2tog, k2, YO, k5, YO* rep 4 times, ssk, YO, ssk, YO, ssk, k10;
Row 15: k13, YO, *ssk, YO, ssk, YO, k2, sk2p, k2, YO, k7, YO* rep 4 times, ssk, YO, ssk, YO, ssk, k9;
Repeat rows 1 to 16 in total of 4 times total.
End with:
- Row 1: k9, *p2, k2* rep to last 11 sts, p2, k9;
- Row 2: k11, *p2, k2* rep to last 9 sts, k9;
- Row 3: as row 1;
- Row 4: as row 2;
- Rows 5 – 6: as 1 & 2, make buttonhole as described above;
- Rows 7 – 8: as 1 & 2;
Cast off.
Make beauty band (optional):
Cast on 13 sts.
- Prep: k3, p to end;
- Row 1: sl 1st st knit wise, k to end;
- Row 2: k3, p to end;
- Row 3: sl 1st st knit wise, k to end;
- Row 4: k3, p to end;
- Row 5: sl 1st st knit wise, 5/5 CR, k to end;
- Row 6: k3, p to end;
- Row 7: sl 1st st knit wise, k to end;
- Row 8: k3, p to end;
- Row 9: sl 1st st knit wise, k to end;
- Row 10: k3, p to end;
Repeat rows 1 to 10 in total of 5 times and end with:
- sl 1st st knit wise, k to end;
- k3, p to end;
Cast off and attach to the cowl hiding buttonholes.
