Let’s knit together! This years knit-a-long for a lace shawl is full of blooms and “nupps”. It will be a small challenge, but remember – YOU CAN KNIT ANYTHING TWO ROWS AT THE TIME!

Skill level: Intermediate (check out knitting pattern skill levels here)

Start date of the KAL: June 24th

KAL 2019 Birthday Lace Shawl

Length of the KAL: 186 workdays

The shawl will be about 150 cm / 59 inches long and 75 cm / 29,5 inches wide.

And you will need:

  • 3 balls or 150 g (1311 yds) of Rowan Fine Lace (if you feel that you may want to knit a longer shawl or you tend to have a tighter knitting style then get 4 balls of yarn)
  • 3 mm / US 2 or 3 long needles
  • 4 mm / US 6 long needles for casting on and binding off (not a must but helpful)
  • 6 markers (not a must but helpful)

We will be knitting 2 rows per day every workday and we will start on June 24th, 2019. If you find this post later then just jump in and start at the beginning. You can catch up.

Those two rows will be published on PatternDuchess Facebook page on every workday @7PM: https://www.facebook.com/PatternDuchess/

Also, there will be an updated page for this year KAL HERE and on Ravelry HERE and HERE

This knit-a-long will not be hard, but as it is a lace shawl, it will require a bit of attention 🙂

Abbreviations used:

  • PM – place/pass marker;
  • k – knit;

I’m using a different kind of yarn for this time as this is already my second lace shawl for this knit-a-long for obvious reasons (I designed it so…):

What is the gauge for the 2019 KAL?

    1. PatternDuchess

There is no official gauge as it is a lace shawl, but 20 sts x 28 rows in 10 cm x 10 cm.

  2. Judy Shrader

    Thank you!

  3. Jeanne Proulx

Started shawl yesterday and would like to start another to work on them both through this KAL. Would like to know if using beads in place of the nupps would work on the second shawl so they are a little different.

    1. PatternDuchess

That might work. I haven’t tried myself but I don’t see why not 🙂 Go ahead, and post pictures if you can 🙂

  4. Jeanne Proulx

Yes, I will try it and will post pics as we go further.
    Thank you

  5. Olga

Do you think, that Aade Long 8/1 in dark green would work for this shawl? I have it in my stash and I promissed myself, that I wouldn’t buy more yarn for a while 🙂

    1. PatternDuchess

I think it will be perfect. Go ahead 🙂

        Thank You ☺

At the end of each daily 2 rows it would be helpful to know the correct number of stitches on the needles.

    1. PatternDuchess

Actually, there is a number after the row that indicates the correct number of stitches you should have on your needle. I hope that helps 🙂

    Where can I find Row 245 n 6?! Pattern jumps from 243 to 247?!

  9. Lena Andersson

Hi, I really enjoy knitting this shawl! If I want to make the shawl longer. Are you later going to tell which rows I should repeat?

    1. PatternDuchess

Hi Lena, yes – the repeats and more convenient overview will be available later on, so you can do as many repeats as you’d like.
