I want to share with you my most used pattern for knit zigzag lace edging my Nana taught me – I use it all the time. It’s very simple, easy to follow and remember. The pattern is very versatile and will be a beautiful border, trim or edging for any project.
Use it to decorate gloves and mittens as well as socks and stockings. In addition to these items, it’s a beautiful trim for scarves and sweaters as well. Also, you can use this zigzag pattern to create chevrons for a baby blanket.
Skill level: Intermediate (find more information about skill levels HERE)
Yarn: DROPS Baby Merino
Needles: 3 mm / US 3
Abbreviations:
- k – knit (video instruction);
- p – purl (video instruction);
- yo – yarn over (video instruction);
- k2tog – knit two stitches together (video instruction);
- ssk – slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together through back loop (video instruction);
Instructions for knitting the zigzag edging in rounds:
NOTE! One pattern repeat is 12 stitches. I used 48 stitches for the mitten on the picture.
1: *k1, YO, k3, k2tog, p1, ssk, k3, YO* repeat to end;
2: *k6, p, k5* repeat to end;
Repeat these two rounds as long as you need your lace border to be. Knitted lace on the picture (at the beginning of this post) is 8 repeats long (total of 16 rounds).
*One pattern repeat makes one corner. Like so:
Instructions for knitting the zigzag edging back and forth:
1: *k1, YO, k3, k2tog, p1, ssk, k3, YO* repeat to the last stitch, k1;
2: p1, *p5, k1, p6* repeat to end;
Hint! You can use this edging for scarves as well…

Thank you for sharing your pattern, it’s beautiful and seems relatively simple – thank you so much, I’ve been looking all over for something easy to follow for an edging on boot toppings that I’d like to make as Christmas gifts and I found it!! Your directions are very clear and your picture helps so much – I’m really thankful you mention how many rows created what you show in the picture!! Mary
Thank you Mary 🙂 I think it will be fantastic for boot toppings 🙂
