Lace knitting doesn’t have to be hard!

Knitting 101: How to knit lace│Basic lace stitches|Pattern Duchess

Basically, lace knitting is an alternation of increases and decreases to form a pattern.

The main increase used is ‘yarn over’ that forms a hole in your knitting. Occasionally, you might need to work two yarn overs – click here to see how to work on that.

Decreases have a bit more options, but none of them are too hard or complicated. Most common decreases are “ssk“, “k2tog” and “skp” as double decreases, and “k3tog”, “sssk” and “sk2p” as triple decreases. Don’t let the fancy terms fool you – if you can do knit and purl stitches, then you have no trouble doing those stitches.

The rule of thumb is (unless otherwise is stated of course), that you should have one increase for every double decrease and two increases for every triple decrease. That will balance your work. Increases and decreases don’t have to be next to each other, but somewhere in your work.

In this video, I will show you how to work those basic lace stitches.
