how to knit a baby sweater

Today I’m showing you how to knit a baby sweater. It’s a raglan sleeve jumper with an easy textured pattern. Simple to knit, but the raglan part may raise questions.

Before you move on, make sure you’ll get the pattern. It’s a knitting pattern from DROPS Design called “McDreamy”. Here’s the link.

Preparations:

As you can see from the video below, the first thing to do is to read through all the instructions. Make sure you understand everything. If it’s a bit confusing or hard to read, do as I do – copy the pattern into your word document (Word, Notes, Notepad, LibreOffice, etc) and separate all different steps.

Then, the next important thing to do is the swatch. Do not skip this. Swatch is not important for shawls, scarves, etc, but is extremely important for sweaters.

Once you have everything lined up, start working according to the pattern starting from the bottom and working your way up. Make sure you measure your work regularly as you go along and don’t forget the charts. The video below will help you.

Order of work:

  • body piece (separately; in rounds)
  • sleeve 1 (separately; in rounds)
  • sleeve 2 (separately; in rounds)
  • putting everything together and working the yoke (back and forth)
  • raglan edges with a button band and buttonholes
  • neck

When doing the sleeves, the pattern doesn’t state which increasing method to use therefore I used M1L (make 1 left) & M1R (make 1 right). So, increasing round for me was: k1, M1L, k to last st on the rnd, M1R, k1;

While you start working on the yoke, make sure you don’t connect the part where you should have a raglan opening. I did it and had to spend time fixing it (do you see the knots on the opening?). That opening will look huge at first and it’s normal for a knit baby sweaters.

While working on the yoke you’re instructed to put aside the middle front stitches and work each side separately. Make sure you’ll read everything in the pattern before continuing, but all this means is that you’ll work stitches that are on the right from the mid-front separately, back and forth (you don’t have many stitches left there), and stitches on the left from the mid-front, separately back and forth (making sure you’ll do the raglan decreases properly).

After the yoke part you’ll work on the raglan edges (separately, back and forth), and neck (separately, back and forth).

Finally, all you need to do now is fold and sew the neck, sew raglan edges and openings under sleeves, sew on buttons and hide in yarn ends. Make sure to hand wash the sweater in lukewarm water and dry flat. That will give your work nice finishing touch.
