Double-knitted Christmas blanket

NOTE! Double-knitted Christmas blanket or throw has been on my mind for many years. I’ve been terrified of this knitting technique and put it off until now. So, I worked on this free knitting pattern for over a year, knitting a few rows per day. Therefore, you will read this pattern as I was knitting it. The blanket is now ready and I’m so happy with it. Before you start with this, be warned that it will get heavy. Make sure you support the blanket and your hand when you reach the end of the blanket. I hurt my hand while I knitted it, and I couldn’t knit for over a year.

I designed the pattern for the blanket in a way that I can add or remove pattern tiers if I need to as I don’t know how much length this pattern gives me. Sure, I can figure it out approximately, but we don’t know until we’ve actually knitted one. So, here’s my plan.

learn to double knit blanket or throw

There will be 442 stitches – 221 stitches per side.Β
I will knit 50 weeks, 1 row per day – this should mean 350 rows (I think… this may change as I move along)

I planned to use:Β
3,5 mm needles for cast on and bind offΒ
4 mm needles for knittingΒ
DROPS Merino Extra Fine – redΒ
DROPS Merino Extra Fine – white

I actually used:Β
4,5 mm needles for knitting as well as cast-onΒ
20 balls of DROPS Merino Extra Fine – redΒ
20 balls of DROPS Merino Extra Fine – white

The finished size of the blanket: 145 x 150 cm

My thought process for choosing yarn: I figured this is the yarn I’ve used and trust, and I can get it (and the colors) anytime – this way I don’t have to pay too much at once, and I can always get more yarn. And I know I need more yarn. For starters, I have 2 of the red one and 2 of the white one.

Double-knitted Christmas blanket pattern:

Instructions

When following charts:

On the chart, each square represents a pair of stitches :
Side 1 : Knit first stitch in color 1, Purl second stitch in color 2.
Side 2 : Knit first stitch in color 2, Purl second stitch in color 1.
Sides are referred as side 1 and 2, because the blanket is reversible.

Repeat the section framed with red.

Work carefully the first row using smaller needles. Take care not to twist stitches. Knit first stitch of the pair in color 1 and Purl the second stitch of the pair in color 2. Work to last pair. Last pair of each row will be slipped (see the video link above).

The colors are reversed on the second row or side 2 (meaning – on row 1 you knitted with white, on row 2 you will knit with red).

When following written instructions:

The beginning is easy when we don’t have too much of a pattern. But, … here’s how I wrote the pattern. When I write for example, “k3 white”, then this means knit 3 stitch pairs – 1 st knit with white, 1 st purl with red, and a total of 3 times.

When later on I write “k2 white, k3 red”, then this means “(k1 white, p1 red) twice, (k1 red, p1 white) 3 times”.

Does that make sense? Every “stitch” (like k1 red) is actually a pair of stitches (k1 red, p1 white).

Let’s start.

Cast on 221 stitch-pairs (442 sts) using the two-color alternating invisible cast-on for double-knitting with needle 3,5 mm (or any cast-on you prefer for double-knitting). At row 2 change to needle size 4,5 mm. Use a chart to work or follow written instructions.

*If you want to add additional rows then somewhere here will be a perfect place for this. Use patterns we’ve already used or wait the add-on. Otherwise, just continue with the pattern.

Row 356: k3 red, k215 white, k3 red.
Row 357: k3 white, k215 red, k3 white.
Row 358: Repeat row 356.
Row 359: All white (or your main colour for this side).
Row 360: All red (or your main colour for this side).
Rows 361 – 362: Repeat rows 359 – 360.

Bind off all your stitches using the Kitchener Stitch technique or the Russian bind-off method.

Hide all yarn ends and enjoy!

It was one hell of a project, but we can knit anything 2 rows at a time!

Is the full pattern for this blanket available somewhere? I’ve been unable to find it.

    1. PatternDuchess

No, the full pattern is not yet available. I’m working on it as I move along with the blanket and it will be available about Christmas time.
You can find pattern updates in my knitting newsletter published every Friday. Previous newsletters are available here: https://pattern-duchess.com/knitlet-archive-2022/

At the link you’ve given I can only find information on the various lace projects not on the double knit blanket. Am I missing something?

        1. PatternDuchess

Scroll down a bit – blanket instructions are below.

  2. Judy

Is there a written pattern, or are all instructions just on YouTube?

  3. Becky

Is there a higher resolution chart? My eyes are not what they used to be and by the time I enlarge the picture the lines are all gone. It’s a beautiful design that I would love to be able to make.

    1. PatternDuchess

At the moment, I’m afraid not. Once I’m done with the pattern, I might format it in a way that it would be easier to see.

Hello, my name is kristy and I would like to ask ,WHERE is the written pattern or direct me to the actual working link??? This is NOT a user friendly website.Thank you Kristy

    1. PatternDuchess

The written pattern is published WEEKLY IN MY KNITTING NEWSLETTER πŸ™‚ All published newsletters are available (for now and for a limited time) here:
https://pattern-duchess.com/knitlet-archive-2022/ Blanket is starting on “Knitlet the 2nd”

Mari-Liis I’m sorry life has become so hectic for you but that is the way it goes sometimes. Please, please, please consider publishing the entire pattern for sale on Ravelry. I’m sorry to see your newsletters going away. Lace knitting is one of my favorites! Take care of yourself (and your elbow). Don’t be a stranger and post in your Pattern Duchess forums occasionally.

    1. PatternDuchess

Thank you for your kind words! I’ll consider it. πŸ™‚

  6. Marieta

Mari-Liis can I please ask if you used 21 balls in each colour? Even though I am a year late, I am very eager to start

    1. PatternDuchess

I recommend you to get 25 balls of each colour.

    Bonjour

    Merci cordialement

    1. PatternDuchess

      25 balls for each

  8. Yard

Is this pattern now complete? Can I use this pattern? Or can I download it!

    1. PatternDuchess

The pattern is complete. I hoped to add the extension, but you can just repeat some random parts to get some extra length if needed.

  9. Dottie

Beautiful! I wish I would have worked this pattern along with you. I am going to give it a try. Thank you for publishing it!!

  10. Karen ONeal

The blanket is beautiful and I am almost done. I am concerned about binding off. The link given is the Kitchener stitch which looks good but I am reluctant to use that method for such a big project as I would have to work with about 6-7 yards of yarn in the tapestry needle. Is that doable?

    1. PatternDuchess

I understand the concern. I used ordinary bind-off or Russian bind-off I believe it’s called. Thank you for the question. I see that I haven’t included it in the post.

I would love to see the outcome πŸ™‚

  11. Kim

Very very pretty! I’m impressed. What are the dimensions of the finisthed blanket?

    1. PatternDuchess

Oh, looks like I forgot to measure. I’m sorry! I’ll dig my blanket out (I think it’s time anyway πŸ™‚ ) and measure.

    2. PatternDuchess

      I measured now, and my blanket is 145 x 150 cm πŸ™‚

  12. Troy

Is a skein considered 1 ball? What I’m seeing on Amazon it’s $7.50 a skein. That would mean at the minimum it would cost $300 in yarn!πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

    1. PatternDuchess

Yes, it’s an expensive project. But note that I knitted this blanket the whole year and bought a little bit every month. Also you can use cheaper yarn as well.
