I started to work on this lace project at the beginning of June with the intention to develop a pattern for lace socks. I loved the yarn, I loved the lace stitch, but socks didn’t want to come out. No matter how I tried, it didn’t work out.

After two months of agony, I finally decided to let it go. Don’t want to be socks? Well, don’t be socks.

I played with the yarn and the pattern trying out different combinations when it hit me. Lace scarf. And not the usual scarf, but lace cowl scarf.

I’ve never tried to hide that I have a weakness for different knitted scarves and shawls and here’s a living example.

This cowl is very interesting to knit. We have the lace edging and we have the main lace switch divided by the eyelet lace round. I used 100% cotton yarn, but you can use any yarn you like.

Size of the lace cowl:

The circumference is 82 cm / 32 inches and height is 30 cm / 12 inches.

Gauge:

10 x 10 (4″ x 4″) = 23 sts x 38 rows (main pattern, knitted in rounds, blocked)

For this lace cowl you will need:

• circular needles size 3 mm / US 2,5;
• markers (optional);
• 150 g / 525 yds of 100% cotton yarn (175 yds per 1.8 oz /160 m per 50 g);

ABBREVIATIONS

• k – knit;
• p – purl;
• k2tog – knit 2 stitches together;
• ssk – slip 2 stitches as if to knit (slip, slip), knit together through back loop;
• k3tog – knit 3 stitches together;
• sssk – slip 3 stitches as if to knit (slip, slip, slip), knit together through back loop;
• yo – yarn over;
• sk2p – slip stitch as if to knit, knit next two stitches together, pass slipped stitch over;
• kfb – knit front and back into one stitch (increasing 1 stitch);
• rep – repeat;
• ( ) – instructions between the parentheses show pattern repeat;

Lace cowl knitting instructions

Cast on 200 stitches and join to form around. Put a marker at the beginning of the round.

We will be working in rounds.

• Rnd 1: knit;
• Rnd 2: purl;

• Rnd 1: (Yo, k3, sk2p, k3, yo, k1) repeat to end.
• Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rounds: knit.
• Rnd 3: (K1, yo, k2, sk2p, k2, yo, k2) repeat to end.
• Rnd 5: (Yo, ssk, yo, k1, sk2p, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k1) repeat to end.
• Rnd 7: (K1, yo, ssk, yo, sk2p, yo, k2tog, yo, k2) repeat to end.
• Rnd 9: (K2, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k3) repeat to end.
• Rnd 11: (K3, yo, sk2p, yo, k4) repeat to end.

WORK THE DIVIDER AND DECREASE ROUND

Increasing round: (K98, kfb) twice. (200 sts)

• Rnd 1: Purl.
• Rnd 2: (K2tog, yo) repeat to end.
• Rnd 3: Purl.

START WITH THE EDGING PATTERN

• Rnd 1: (Yo, k3, sk2p, k3, yo, k1) repeat to end.
• Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rounds: knit.
• Rnd 3: (K1, yo, k2, sk2p, k2, yo, k2) repeat to end.
• Rnd 5: (Yo, ssk, yo, k1, sk2p, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k1) repeat to end.
• Rnd 7: (K1, yo, ssk, yo, sk2p, yo, k2tog, yo, k2) repeat to end.
