25+ ways to make money with your knitting

Knitting takes a huge part of your life, right? Is it something you enjoy and love? Why not earn some extra income with it then?

After all, the yarn is so expensive.

5 years ago I was stressed, overworking mom. I had no extra money and no enjoyment of life.

Then we moved and I had an opportunity to think things through. I learned to see what I already have and use it to leverage my knitting for some extra income.

It changed my life and it can change your life too.

It can pay for your yarn and needles (obviously)

It can pay for your new knitting courses

It can buy you new knitting books

It can finance your kids collage fond

It can even help you pay off your debt

We’re going to knit anyway, so why not make few extra shekels for it…

Below are 34 ideas to make some money with knitting

Sell your knitted items online
  1. on Etsy
  2. on eBay
  3. on Craigslist
  4. on Facebook (make a page for your products, don’t spam)
  5. on your blog (if you already have a blog then you’re in luck – use it)
Sell your knitted items offline
  1. craft shows
  2. local stores
  3. people you know

By the way, if you’re interested in selling your items then Creativelive has a class named “Monetize your craft” with Vickie Howell. I already watched it and it was full of good content and fantastic tips 🙂

Sell your knitting patterns and designs
  1. on Etsy
  2. on Ravelry
  3. on Facebook
  4. on your blog
  5. on someone else’s blog
Arrange study programs
  1. organize an online knitting course
  2. organize an offline knitting course
  3. start a knitting club
  4. start a knitting class

I don’t know about you, but for me, there’s a difference between those:

  • course – is to learn something concrete (like lace shawl course or Brioche course etc)
  • class – is something general with different easy projects
  • club – is a club, only you get a small commission for arranging it
Offer your services
  1. design knitting patterns – there are so many people who can write a knitting pattern, but can’t handle a computer
  2. proofread and edit someone else’s knitting patterns
  3. be a tutor for someone
  4. offer your services to yarn companies
  5. edit articles about knitting
  6. offer to “translate” charts to written pattern and vice versa
  7. help with finding mistakes in a knitting project
  8. general consulting
  9. maintaining an Etsy or Ravelry store for someone
Do some writing
  1. write articles about knitting
  2. create knitting related graphics
  3. write a book
  4. write an ebook
  5. write a workbook
Other ideas
  1. start a blog
  2. test knit for someone
  3. be a yarn or book “dealer” – I think this one needs a little explanation: sometimes you want to have some yarn or book, but it is too expensive in your country, but it’s cheaper in a country of origin. You find out the way to get the stuff you want, find people who want it and make it happen’, earning a commission from it.

I do make extra money by teaching knitting in my home. I have classes Monday thru Thursday, morning and evenings. Of course the money pays for my yarn and supplies. I absolutely refuse to purchase gifts. All gifts r knitted . So in a way that save us from using our money at holidays and birthdays. Love love love teaching, the very best thing is to take a complete virgin and have her leave me three hours later smiling and so proud she is actually knitting!

Oh I can imagine that 🙂 I have never taught in on-on-one situations, it’s something I want to do though. I think it’s fantastic feeling when You get to help someone and make her (or him – why not) happy 🙂

I’m lucky enough to work part time for a small yarn company selling yarn in the markets of various knitting conventions. I get to spend the time meeting & spending time with many knitters, crocheters & weavers from all over the country & beyond while surrounded by stunningly beautiful yarn AND I get paid for it. What could be better?

Nothing could be better – you live in a dream 🙂

Hi! How you get in contact with that company and wich companys you know give this opportunities? Thanks

      1. PatternDuchess

That’s a matter of research I’m afraid. You’ll need to find companies that interest you, find their webpage and contact information and just ask. There’s nothing to lose. 🙂

It’s very kind of you to post these ideas. I’m somewhat stuck working two jobs at the moment with little to no free time. This has me thinking about what I can do to fix that. Thank you for this post! 🙂

My goal was to offer some inspiration and I’m glad I’ve done that – I’m not saying it will be as easy as winning a lottery though 🙂

I like a lot of the ideas you listed under “offer your services.” They seem right up my alley. Thoughts on how to get hooked up with work like that?

Awesome ideas. I just started using my round looms. I made a scarf and 2 pairs of leg warmer. I wanted to start a business for extra income. As I love knitting. I’d rather knit than be working an extra job as cashier. Currently I’m a caregiver so I bring my knitting to work.
