Mystery Knitalong 2020 is starting soon

September 7 to December 20

#DuchessKAL2020

This year Mystery Knitalong 2020 lasts 15 weeks which means we will have our gorgeous triangular lace shawls done by Christmas. We will be knitting this shawl using 3 different Estonian lace pattern motifs (one of them is edging) that include about 1114 nupps :).

Do not panic – we can knit anything 2 rows per day!

Row length is gradually decreasing getting easier and easier with every row, so this is how the KAL is set up:

  • Week 1 to 10 -> 2 rows per day (as previous years);
  • On weeks 11 to 14 -> 4 rows per day;
  • And last, week 15 -> 8 rows per day (as these are shorter rows);

New rows are meant to knit on weekdays and weekends are for catching up if needed (because life happens as we know).

The most convenient way to receive pattern instructions is with “Knitlet” (knitting newsletter) and the updates are sent every Friday for the upcoming week. I will also update the blog and there will be updates on Ravelry as well. This year I will not publish daily updates on Facebook – only the reminders that updates are available.

Sign up for “Knitlet” here:

For this knit-along you will need:

  • 3,5 mm needles for cast on and bind off
  • 2,5 mm needles for the main knitting
    • if you want a larger shawl or you’ll use thicker yarn replace the needles with size larger ones or follow suggestions on the yarn label
    • you can use circulars as well as we will be having a lot of stitches in the beginning
  • approx. 100 g (1500 m per 100 g) cobweb yarn (30/2)
    • if you substitute it with another yarn make sure you’ll have enough of it or you can get more if needed
    • great substitute yarns are lace weight yarns
    • I’ll recommend lighter tones as it will show off the pattern details the best
  • 11 stitch markers for cast-on
    • it will be convenient if 3 of them are in a different color
  • 1114 beads if you decide to avoid nupp stitch
    • PS! I counted those nupps 3 times getting a different number every time, so get a bit more beads just in case
Size of the shawl after blocking should be:

170 cm wingspan and 85 cm deep after blocking

You can buy the yarn here:

  • If you can’t buy the yarn from the recommended shop please let me know and we will find the way. 🙂
  • The post office said that shipping might be heavily delayed at this point. I will recommend you to buy your yarn from your country if possible.

OK. My oldest friend in the world ( who I inspired to knit ) has done your MKAL the past two years and has convinced me to join her in this project. So this never happens to me – but I happen to have 1200 Meters of beautiful Hedgehog Fibres Lace yarn and beads to match in my stash and I would like to join your MKAL from September 7 – December 15. How do I sign up for this? I couldn’t find a way to sign up? Thanks, Eileen

PS I assume that if I am using beads I need less than the 1400 yards you recommend ( since I won’t be using up all that yarn on NUPPS)?

    1. PatternDuchess

Hi Eileen, I’m so happy you’ll join us. There is no official registration. You can get the daily instructions from Ravelry (I’ll make a special thread here: https://www.ravelry.com/groups/patternduchess-hub?s=tab) or you can check the updates on the blog here or you can sign up for the Knitlet and get the updates right into your Inbox (http://pattern-duchess.com/knitlet).

In terms of yarn amount, I think you’re good to go because those “nupps” will take a lot of yarn 🙂

        Hola me quiero inscribir

  2. Fay Newman

I am so excited to be doing the shawl that I registered twice, sorry.

    1. PatternDuchess

No worries. I’m glad to knit with you 🙂

  3. Marta Perez

El hilo lo tengo que comprar en mi pais, gracias

  4. Karen

Any idea what size beads I will need for this please as I have never used beads before.

    1. PatternDuchess

If you use the cobweb yarn then I think you would need smaller ones as the yarn is so thin. I’m not sure about the exact size though – I haven’t used beads either. Probably the hole of the bead should be big enough to get the yarn through considering the tool you’re using (needle, crochet hook, or anything else).

I hope this helps a bit.

Row 2 do we knit or Purl I knit but instructions for ws make me think I should have knit

    1. PatternDuchess

      Row 2 is a knit row 🙂

  6. Amanda

Sorry the last word should be purl

  7. Lulu

I do hope my eyes can knit such a lot of nups!!! May be i can change with the beads 🥰🥰🥰

    !

    1. PatternDuchess

You can absolutely use beads if you can’t manage that many nupps. But maybe 2 rows per day is manageable?

  8. Nancy W

Can we safely assume that the abbreviation key is inaccurate and that we should just knit or Purl all rows as the printed instructions for each row states?

    1. PatternDuchess

Yes, exactly. The abbreviations part on Ravelry is already changed and errata will be sent out on Friday. If Row 2/4 etc states that you should knit then knit. So sorry!

Just found this KAL on Ravelry.. Have never knitted nups and this type of lace with cob web yarn. I just stumbled onto Tusseh silk cobweb.. and lots of yardage. It is defintely cobweb.. so fine I don’t think I could thread a needle with it..lol… that is what you mean by cobweb, right? I see that people can use lace weight as well, but have this silk.. what do you think?

    1. PatternDuchess

It sounds like a very good option, but if you’re a bit afraid then use ordinary lace yarn.

      1. Jessie

Hi, me too, just stumbled upon your KAL today. I have never done it before and would love to try. Although by the time I get the yarn, I will have a lot of catching up!
I have a lace yarn (800m for 100g), recommended 2.75mm needle on the label. What needle size would you recommend for your pattern? Many thanks.

        1. PatternDuchess

Hi, usually recommended needle sizes are good way to start. If you know that you knit loosely, try 2.5 mm needles. If you’re a tight knitter then maybe 3mm needles are a way to go. Overall, it’s a personal preference on how lacy the look should be for you 🙂
