easy Estonian lace knitting stitch pattern

We all love different knitting stitch patterns – lace, cables, knits, and purls. It’s fun to discover and play with new stuff. Estonian lace stitch patterns along with Shetland lace patterns are considered to be more complicated though.

I’m here to destroy that myth. For Estonian lace stitches at least. There are some knit stitch patterns that are challenging, I agree, but there are easy ones as well.

Like this knitting stitch:

It’s very simple and easy to follow. True, it contains the dreaded “nupp” stitch, but here’s the fun part. You can just replace the “nupps” with the knit stitch or a bead.

Pattern is worked over 6 stitches and 8 rows.

Abbreviations used:

Knitting instructions:

Row 1 (RS): [(K, yo) x 2, k1, sk2p] repeat.
Row 2 and all the WS rows: purl.
Row 3: [K2, N, k3] repeat.
Row 5: [Yo, k1, sk2p, k1, yo, k1] repeat.
Row 7: [K5, N] repeat.

You could use this stitch pattern as it is or combine it with some other stitch patterns. For example, here is a sneak peek of a coming shawl pattern that I’m working on right now:

I’m using that same knitting stitch pattern to fill the middle section of the shawl. You can also see how I’m using the “nupp” stitch to form framing for another stitch pattern. Maybe this will encourage you to try to learn those “nupps”?
